Mexico: the most choice and the best food

Mexico has the widest range of all-inclusive resorts at every price. Tripadvisor's 2026 Best of the Best list for Mexico is led by Grand Velas Los Cabos (5.0), Grand Velas Riviera Maya and Secrets Maroma Beach (both 4.8). The Caribbean side has the swimmable beaches but also sargassum seaweed in spring and summer. The Pacific side around Los Cabos has dramatic scenery, but many resort beaches are too rough to swim, as reviewers at Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos and Grand Velas Los Cabos point out. Dominican Republic: the best value per night

Punta Cana usually gives you the most resort for the money, with long palm-lined beaches in Bávaro and Cap Cana and short transfers. Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana is No. 1 on Tripadvisor's 2026 Caribbean all-inclusive list and JOIA Bávaro by Iberostar is No. 14. Sargassum reaches the east coast in season too. Jamaica: personality, and a recovery year

Jamaica offers music, food and more to do off-resort than most destinations, plus Sandals' home turf. Hurricane Melissa made landfall as a Category 5 on Oct. 28, 2025 near New Hope in Westmoreland, and about 40% to 50% of hotels were damaged. Sandals reopened five Jamaican resorts in December 2025; Sandals South Coast is scheduled to reopen November 18, 2026, and Sandals Montego Bay and Sandals Caribbean Cay (renamed from Sandals Royal Caribbean) on December 18, 2026, per Sandals. Recovery elsewhere is uneven: posters on Tripadvisor's Jamaica forum report Royalton Blue Waters reopened Sept. 15, 2026, and JOIA Rose Hall was only partly open in October. Turks & Caicos, St. Lucia, Aruba and the Bahamas

Turks & Caicos has Grace Bay but fewer all-inclusives and higher prices. St. Lucia has the most dramatic scenery, the twin Pitons, and long, winding transfers from Hewanorra (UVF). Aruba is dry, with about 20 inches of rain a year, and sits south of the main development region for tropical storms. The Bahamas are the closest to Florida, but Nassau's all-inclusives rate lower on Tripadvisor than the leaders elsewhere: Sandals Royal Bahamian scores 4.1 and Breezes 3.9.

Costa Rica and the USA

Costa Rica's all-inclusives cluster in Guanacaste on the Pacific; go for wildlife and volcanoes as much as for the beach. True all-inclusives are rare in the U.S., where most beach resorts sell rooms only and add resort fees. Two forces shape the calendar: price and weather risk. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and in an average year it produces 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes, according to NOAA's National Hurricane Center. The first hurricane typically forms in early to mid-August. Los Cabos sits in the eastern Pacific basin, where the season starts May 15. Sargassum, the brown seaweed that piles up on Caribbean beaches, blooms mostly in summer; the University of South Florida's Sargassum Watch reported that amounts were declining in September 2026 but still high compared with previous years for the month.

Prices move the other way. For all ten resorts on this page, Kayak's cheapest month falls between August and October.

The 2026 season has been relatively quiet for resort areas so far: the only hurricane as of mid-October, Isaias, made landfall near Destin on the Florida Panhandle on Oct. 10, according to Wikipedia's 2026 Atlantic hurricane season summary.

Ratings tell you a resort is well run. These questions tell you whether it's right for you.

1. Can you actually swim at the beach? Many Los Cabos beaches are too rough, and reviewers say so at Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos and Grand Velas Los Cabos. In the Riviera Maya, Grand Velas reviewers mention a narrow beach with rocks underfoot. Search reviews for "swim," "rocks" and "seaweed."
2. Adults-only, family or both? Paired resorts solve mixed groups: Hyatt Zilara (adults) and Hyatt Ziva (all ages) share a beach in Cap Cana, and Grand Velas keeps a 16-and-over Grand Class section.
3. How big is it? Beaches Turks & Caicos has 758 rooms and 23 restaurants; S Hotel Montego Bay has about 120 rooms. Big means more choice but more walking, more reservations and more crowding at the pool.
4. How do restaurant reservations work? At Grand Velas Riviera Maya, reviewers advise booking weeks ahead. At Beaches, one 2026 guest couldn't book before arrival and missed out. Ask before you pay.
5. How far is the airport? S Hotel is 1.5 miles from Montego Bay's airport and Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana is 6.4 miles from Punta Cana's. Sandals Grande St. Lucian is about 25 miles from Hewanorra as the crow flies, on winding roads.
6. What's the upsell culture? 2026 reviews at Secrets Maroma Beach and Hotel Xcaret Arte describe hard sales pitches for vacation-club memberships, and club-level upgrades are pushed hard at check-in almost everywhere.

Check the unit. We quote per room per night for two adults. Many brands and package sites quote per person, per night, which makes a $600 room look like $300.

Month matters more than anything. Kayak's averages show how wide the swings are: Secrets Maroma Beach averages $480 a night in August and $1,258 in February; Beaches Turks & Caicos runs $897 in September and $1,781 in March. If your dates are flexible, move them before you start hunting for promo codes.

Day of the week matters a little. At Hyatt Ziva Cancun, Kayak's data shows Tuesday as the cheapest day to book ($649 average) and Friday the most expensive ($749).

Room category is the next big lever. Swim-up suites, club levels and butler rooms can add hundreds a night. They're worth it when they include something you'd use every day, such as a quieter pool or better drinks, and not worth it for a slightly bigger balcony.

Sales are real but cyclical. Sandals and Beaches run named promotions, including a Winter Blues Sale that Sandals advertised with up to $1,650 off plus a $350 air credit, and a Great Jamaica Comeback Sale in 2026. Hotel-direct and member rates can beat online travel agencies too; one Cancun forum poster said contacting the resort directly saved about $1,500 over an online booking, though your results will vary.

Budget for taxes and fees. In Quintana Roo, Tripadvisor forum posters point to an official Visitax of MX$293 per foreign visitor and warn of reports of overcharging at Cancun airport kiosks, so pay on the official site. In St. Lucia, Jade Mountain's published rates are subject to 20% VAT, service charge and resort fees, plus a tourism levy.

Resort zones are among the most heavily policed and guarded parts of each country, but the U.S. government's advice still applies once you leave the gate. As of October 2026, the State Department rates:

For Mexico, the State Department says conditions vary widely by state and advises U.S. citizens to follow its employee rules: no driving between cities after dark, and use dispatched or app-based taxis rather than hailing cabs on the street. Its Jamaica advisory notes that the embassy routinely receives reports of sexual assaults, including from U.S. tourists at resorts.

Health basics matter too. The CDC recommends hepatitis A vaccination for unvaccinated travelers to Mexico, typhoid vaccination for most travelers, and mosquito precautions because of dengue. At the resort, watch your drink being poured, stick to sealed bottled water if the resort doesn't filter its own, and use the in-room safe.

• Guest ratings from Tripadvisor, Booking.com and Kayak, checked in October 2026 and shown with review counts.
• Recent review patterns. We read the newest reviews (mostly June to October 2026) and the platforms' review summaries, and weight recurring complaints more than one-off rants.
• Awards and inspections, including Tripadvisor's 2026 Best of the Best, Forbes Travel Guide stars and the U.S. News rankings.
• Real prices: Kayak's average nightly rates by month, not teaser "from" prices.
• What's actually included: tips, transfers, premium drinks and restaurant access.

Each resort gets six sub-scores out of 10 (food, beach, rooms, service, activities, value). The overall score is our judgment informed by those, with food and service weighted most, then beach and value. A 9 means we'd book it without hesitation for the right traveler; a 7 means it's good value with clear trade-offs.

• Jamaica rebuilt after Hurricane Melissa. Sandals reopened five Jamaican hotels in December 2025. Sandals South Coast follows on November 18, 2026, and Sandals Montego Bay and Sandals Caribbean Cay (renamed from Sandals Royal Caribbean) on December 18, 2026. Other properties reopened through September 2026, and some were still only partly open in October.
• New Tripadvisor rankings. The 2026 Best of the Best all-inclusive list for the world features Coco Plum Island Resort in Belize at No. 7, Grand Velas Los Cabos at No. 8 and Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana at No. 17. Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya, 2025's No. 1, didn't make the 2026 list.
• Beaches Turks & Caicos opened Treasure Beach Village, and United plans weekly Denver to Providenciales nonstops from Dec. 16, 2026.
• New flight options. American Airlines now flies nonstop from Miami to Ocho Rios on Wednesdays and Saturdays, according to Sandals, which cuts the transfer for Ocho Rios resorts to about 20 minutes.
• Hyatt has absorbed Playa Resorts' branding. The old Playa Resorts website now redirects to Resorts by Hyatt, which Hyatt describes as part of its Inclusive Collection, so expect Hyatt booking channels and loyalty rules at former Playa properties.
• Sargassum stayed heavy. USF's monitoring showed above-normal seaweed into September 2026, so check recent beach photos in reviews before a spring or summer trip.
